ok, i bought a 97 golf gti 8 valve a month or so ago, the one from phil at autokraft, and im not to chuffed with the fuel economy of the car, im basically getting about 90 miles to 20 quids worth of fuel, which coming from subaru ownership seems excessive, so firstly, is this excessive or not and if so, what could be causing it??

im guessing its a case of checking maf is working properly, and obvious stuff like holes in fuel tank or hoses etc etc, but is there anything these cars are known for that would cause the fuel usage that im experiencing.

other than that the car go's quite well, and drives quite nicely, although im pretty sure there is either a wheel bearing or cv on its way out as there is a vibration of some sort, but apart from that would like to get to the bottom of the fuelling issue and start enjoying the car properly.

any help appreciated.

Try another MAF. When we got the car it would not run with the MAF connected. I split it and the read inside was black with dirt deposits. I used isopropenol MAF cleaner and it came up ok and the car run a lot better and did not cut out but never used it much so never noticed fuel economy. The dirt on the sensor may of damaged the MAF when it heats up.

The exhaust never realy got any soot deposits on the tips so i would not think it's the lambda sensor.

Also have a check of the vacuum hoses to see it any have split as this is a common VW problem on most older VW's.

Ok, thanks for that, so i guess i need to find someone who would be willing to let me borrow a maf that is known as working and see if that makes any difference to the fuel economy.

Id check all the breather hoses too.

When I bought my 8v it was running very poorly but after replacing the breather hose (most were split) it now runs alot better and it alot better on fuel.

But going off what Paul said the MAF is always a good start with these 8v engines. If you do want to try another MAF I have a few around so let me know.

Mart, thanks for that, it is appreciated, ive sat and worked it out, 20 quid is only about 3 gallon in fuel so 90 miles give or take isnt actually that bad, however, im sure it could be better, i popped into bvr automotive in longton this morning on way back from a job and he is going to have a look over the car on wednesday and let me know his thoughts on what way he would go with it, im sure there isnt that much wrong, but i cant cope with grinding noises so that will be first to be sorted, then get the suspension all set up properly and it should feel a whole lot better.

If i need to borrow a maf mart i,ll pm you if thats ok, just gonna see what these guys suggest first before i start putting people out their way for parts.
