are all the connections and earthing straps free from corrosion and rust?

and more importantly that none of the wires have been chewed through by mices and so on?

1st - Check your earth points from the battery to the bodywork.
2nd - Check that your alternator is wired up correctly
3rd - Check your earthing points from the fuse block to the bodywork
4th - check your fuses and relays

Petrol or diesel?

petrol - check the ignition coil wires
Diesel - check the glow plugs

hmm you dont nesessarily need an alternator kuz if its a new battery then it will have anough powerr to kick it over and run for a while you wouldnt be able to run with no altrnator though as that obv recharges the battery and if it dont work then the batt goes dead reasonably quick so wouldnt make a difference if it not starting.

hmm really got me stumped that one has with out lookin at it
