I need new pads and brakes for the bora all round and im probably gonna go for some bits from gsf some brembo discs and then pagid pads my mate used to have them on his golf and said they worked really wel together so probably gonna give them ago.

anyone else running none standard ones?

GTi standard parts on the caddy so far... but used to run with EBC Red pads, mintex discs on the MINI which never failed at any speed... actually the stopping distance from 120-0mph was less than what it should be from 70.... without fade too...

Brembo will always be a good choice...

vented discs? grooves? drilled?

will never get drilled discs as have a few mates who have had there drilled discs crack on them so not the safest i feel

will prob be vented as are vented standard i think

ive just finished building and fitting a brake bias box under my dash and renewing all my brake lines. it was an absolute mision to do. gonna test drive it tomorrow so this might be my last ever post haha. gonna upgrade the calipers and discs next as well as fitting disks on the rear.

im gonna go 4 256mm and sum good pads 4 now. maybe sum 4 pots once my engine is finished

i also have 280mm Vr6 / G60 brakes. there g60 disks with VR6 carriers and calipers, still need to get some braided hoses tho, but they are amazing compared to before.

those who have said they are getting uprated brake disks, i just wouldnt waste your money, standard disks work really well and have only heard of problems with drilled disks

On the MK3 i had ATE Power discs and EBC green stuff pads. On the leon its running standard 280mm which are being swapped for TT 312mm and Porsche 4pots.

My Mk1 Polo now has a Mk3 GT setup, brembo discs with Pagid pads, VWI calipers with homemade braded hoses...much better than the 30 year old standard setup...

I'm not too sure as to what brakes i'm having on the Mk1 yet, I was originally thinking Wilwood 4 pots but i've heard bad things about them so i'll probably use the hi-spec ones instead,

I need small brakes with good stopping power or my Mk1 will look ridiculously like a monster truck with massive wheels on to fit over the brakes lol

well if you fit 280's youll need at least 15" whells depending on the claipers you use, you could fit 256's with a big master cylinder, or something more custome that i have no idea about lol

for the mk1 it depends what you want to do, you have a number of options.

1. stick with the stock 239mm disc and run a good pad, - depening on the power spec of the engine and the use it will get either green stuff pads, or if its going to be give some stick look at DS2500 they cost a bit but you get what you pay for...this set up with be ok for normal use and some bashing but it will overheat quick due to the small disc area and the leaverage from the smaller discs isnt up to track work (with mintex road pads and 239 drilled discs I used a full set of pads in 40 laps of donny and I could only do 4-7 laps a time before I lost the brakes fully due to fade from over heating, and that was with a 8v gti that was stock pretty much, just stripped out a bit..)

2. 256mm discs - this will need 14" wheels.

now for the 256s theres a choice,

- either use vauxhal calipers from vecras / astras etc (I can find the full fitment list if you like) these go straight on-ish - but need shoulded bolts to fit the carriers and also need new brake lines from a vauxhal belmont iirc (i have the extact model info again if needed) as they have a banjo bolt fitting. for the discs you use mk2 16v disc from 88 on words,

- option 2 is to use the mk2 16v girling 54 caliper and carriers from a audi sport - these are getting hard to get hold of now, but can still be found if you look hard enough, and no the mk2 golf one wont fit the mk1 hub...so they cant be used..... the plus side to this conversion is that it still uses a vag caliper so your org brake lines fit, but the pad area is a smidge smaller than the vauxhal set up, but it will still be man enough to stop a fairly brisk mk1

for 280s - either vaxual ones again, the same as the above applies as its just a bigger carrier to space the caliper further out, or use G60/mk3 golf gti (16v or VR6 up to 95/96 age) calipers as they are the same so dont pay a premium for "G60" brakes...

the golf ones will need fitting with adaptor brackets which you can get for £50 or so from the caddy forum, again your original brake lines fit fine with the golfs and you will need new vaux lines for the vaux calipers.

280s will need 15s and even then some wont clear them so you will need to be careful on the offset and style of rim, but this is the top "budget" set up with out going to 4 pot brakes and my 280s on the mk1 using the mk3 calipers with yellow stuff pads is more than man enough to get the rears to go so light they lock and skip if im not careful.


also not that for the larger calipers you will need a mk2 16v master cylinder and servo, as the pedal becomes stupidly long with out due to the larger piston needing more fluid to make it move, and the vaux ones even bigger at 57mm piston..but its a worth while mod even if you just keep the stock calipers as it shortens then pedal travel, as does adjusting all the linkages on the bulk head properly


there are other options like spacing the small caliper out but I dont like this as the pad areas too small and you need special discs as the caliper moves inborad / outboard from its oringal place so the stock discs wont be in the right place, I did read somewhere that rover discs might work, but it would be very hit or miss, and like I say not worth it really.


Then you need to think about pads... as there are pads and then there are pads.... but there is also alot of brand engineering that goes on....like mintex, textar, pagid... all owned by TMD friction.....so one material can be sold under many different brands for different prices, but if you need to know more on this let me know as its part of my job vehicle testing.
